Matt Scanlan and his friend Diederik started Naadam, a cashmere clothing company, after visiting Mongolia in 2012. They borrowed $2.5 million using Matt's parents' house as collateral to buy wool directly from goat herders in the Gobi Desert. By cutting out middlemen, they could pay herders double the usual price while selling sweaters for just $98 - much less than competitors. The company started in their apartment, grew with $50 million in investments, and reached $100 million in sales by 2022. Their success came from controlling the entire supply chain and focusing on quality while keeping prices affordable.
